Ask @sunny in staff messaging

You don't have to leave a conversation to ask a question about the school. Type @sunny in a staff channel or a staff DM and it answers in the thread.

It shows up in the mention picker with an AI tag, and its replies always wear that tag on the name row. @assist, @help and @ai work as well.

Staff only, structurally

@sunny is available in staff channels and staff DMs. It is not available in any thread a family can see.

That isn't a rule we asked the model to follow. If a parent is a participant in the thread, the mention is refused before Sunny reads a word of it: no session, no model call, nothing. There is no prompt to talk it around, because there's no path to reach.

The same fail-closed posture applies to anyone we can't place: if a participant holds no active role at your school, the room can't be proved staff-only, so it's declined the same way a parent room is.

What it will answer

What @sunny can reach from a channel is a short, fixed list of reads plus exactly one thing that isn't. The reads: attendance today, the roster for a room, staffing, billing health at a glance, the enrollment pipeline and funnel, a child's profile, a day's daily report, whether an immunization form is still outstanding, a name lookup.

The one non-read is the hand-off described below, and it only ever proposes: it puts a draft in the asker's own tray and creates, queues and sends nothing. So the channel still can't change a thing about your school: no record is written, no message goes out, and there is no approve button in the thread.

Answers can attach a small result card (a list, a count) rather than a wall of text.

The room is the audience

The answer is capped by the least-privileged person in the channel, not by whoever asked. A director asking in a room that includes teachers gets a teacher-level answer, because everyone in the room is going to read it.

Ask for something the room's floor can't reach and @sunny says so plainly rather than answering around it.

Anything consequential leaves as a draft

Ask for a birthday note to those six families and you get: "Drafted. It's waiting in your tray. Nothing sends until someone approves it."

The channel never becomes an approval surface. There's no approve button in the thread, and no version of this where a message goes out because six people were talking fast. The draft is in the tray of whoever asked, with the usual approve, redraft and reject. See drafts wait for your team.

Handing work off this way is a director or admin action, and the room has to be director-level too: an admin channel or DM. In a room with teachers in it, @sunny answers questions; the drafting starts from your own tray.

Housekeeping

• @sunny is a first-person voice here: this is the one surface where it speaks as "I", always labelled.
• Quoting an earlier message that contained a mention doesn't re-trigger it.
• A conversation stays open briefly after a mention, so follow-ups don't all need the @, and it stays quiet when the thread isn't talking to it.
• There's a daily ceiling on mentions per school (50), so two people @-ing each other in a loop can't run up a bill.
