Build milestone portfolios
Capture developmental observations against a goal framework, then review each child's progress over time on one portfolio.
Milestone portfolios track how a child is developing against a set of goals over time. You capture observations (each one logging where a child sits on a goal) and Clear Day rolls them up into a per-child portfolio: the latest level on every goal, plus the full timeline of observations behind it.
This is developmental assessment, and it's different from tagging an observation with skills. See Portfolios vs. skill-tagging below for where each one fits.
Open Milestone portfolios
In Grow, open Milestone portfolios. Pick a child from the Select a child menu at the top right to load their portfolio. Until you pick someone, the portfolio area prompts you to select a child.
Set up a framework
A framework is the set of goals you assess against. Each goal has a domain, a description, and an optional code. Clear Day ships a built-in seed framework, marked with a seed tag in the Frameworks panel. The seed is read-only: you can't capture observations directly against it.
To start assessing, an admin clones the seed into your school:
- In the Frameworks panel, find the seed framework.
- Tap Clone to your school. Clear Day deep-copies its goals into a framework your school owns.
Once you have a clone, its goals become available in the Capture observation picker. Only a director or admin sees the Clone to your school action, and it appears only while your school has no clone yet. Until a usable framework exists, the panel reminds you to clone one before you can capture observations.
Capture an observation
With a child selected and a framework cloned, tap Capture observation.
- Goal: pick the milestone or goal you're assessing. Goals are grouped by framework and listed as domain, then description, with the code in parentheses when there is one.
- Progress level: choose where the child sits:
- Not yet
- Emerging
- Progressing
- Mastered
- Note: optional. Jot what you observed (up to 2,000 characters).
- Tap Save.
The observation is timestamped and added to that child's portfolio. The Capture observation button stays disabled until you've selected a child and your school has at least one framework with goals.
Read the portfolio
The portfolio groups everything by goal. Each goal card shows:
- The domain, description, and code for the goal.
- A latest level tag: the most recent progress level recorded for that goal (Not yet, Emerging, Progressing, or Mastered), color-coded so you can scan a child's standing at a glance.
- An observation timeline: every observation for that goal, newest first, each with its progress level, the date it was observed, and the note if there is one.
The timeline is the evidence behind the rollup: it shows how a child moved from one level to the next over time, not just where they landed. If a child has no observations yet, the portfolio says so.
Portfolios vs. skill-tagging
These look similar but do different jobs:
- Milestone portfolios (this article) are developmental assessment. You record a child's progress level on a goal from a framework, and Clear Day rolls those observations into a per-goal progress view over time.
- Skill-tagging attaches one or more skills from your skill catalog to a single observation, so you can see which skills a child has been observed practicing. It's a tag on a moment, not a progress rating against a developmental goal.
Use portfolios when you want to assess and report on where a child is developing; use skill-tagging when you want to label what a child was working on in a given observation.
