Manage notifications and quiet hours
Pick which Clear Day alerts you get, set quiet hours, and unmute conversations you've silenced.
You decide which alerts reach you and when. Turn whole categories on or off, set quiet hours for the evening, and bring back any conversations you've muted.
One thing you can't turn off: incident and head-count alerts. They always come through, regardless of your settings. (Ratio alerts have their own toggle for staff. See below.)
Open your notification settings
- On the web: go to Settings, then Notifications.
- In the app: open Settings and tap Notifications.
Turn categories on or off
Under Categories, flip the switch beside each type:
| Category | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Messages | DMs, channels, and mentions |
| Attendance | Check-in and check-out updates |
| Student Events | Activities, meals, and notes |
| Daily Updates | End-of-day summaries |
Each switch saves the moment you flip it. There's no separate save button.
Incident and head-count alerts aren't on this list. They have no toggle, and quiet hours never silence them.
Ratio alerts (staff)
If you're a teacher or admin, a Safety card sits above the categories with a single Ratio alerts toggle: "Get notified when a room you're assigned to goes over ratio." It's on by default. Turn it off to stop your own out-of-ratio notifications. This is a personal opt-out. It doesn't affect anyone else, and it doesn't touch the always-on incident and head-count alerts.
An admin can also mute ratio alerts for a whole room from the classroom's edit form, which silences that room's out-of-ratio alerts for everyone. See Manage classrooms. Parents don't see the Safety card at all.
Set quiet hours
Quiet hours (Do Not Disturb) mute everything except safety alerts during the window you set.
- Find the Quiet hours section.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb.
- On the web, set the Start and End times. Times move in 5-minute steps, and the window you save shows beside Do Not Disturb (for example,
22:00 – 07:00). - To end quiet hours, turn Do Not Disturb back off.
When it's off, you'll see "Mute non-safety notifications during set hours" in place of a time window.
In the app, switching on Do Not Disturb uses 22:00 to 07:00. To change the start and end times, open Settings > Notifications on the web.
Unmute a conversation
Muted a direct message or channel? It shows up under Muted conversations. That section only appears when you have at least one muted thread.
Find the conversation and tap Unmute beside it. In the app, confirm Unmute when asked. It's back on your normal notifications right away.
Tapping a notification
A push notification isn't just a heads-up: tapping it takes you straight to the thing it's about. Open the app from a push and Clear Day reads what's attached to it and jumps you to the right place:
| Notification | Where it opens |
|---|---|
| New message, reply, mention, or channel add | That conversation |
| Check-in/check-out and student-event alerts | That student's profile |
| Incident report (filed or shared) | That incident report |
| Ratio alert | That classroom |
| Head-count alert | That head count |
| Failed-payment alert (parents) | Your payment methods |
A few pushes land on a list rather than a single record: a spot-check discrepancy opens spot checks, and an auto-checkout summary opens your classroom list. If a notification arrives for something your role can't open, the tap simply does nothing rather than dropping you on an empty screen.
iOS action buttons
On iPhone and iPad, some pushes carry quick-action buttons you can use without opening the full app first:
- Message pushes show a Reply button.
- Incident pushes show Acknowledge and View buttons.
Each button opens Clear Day to the same place a normal tap would, so you land in the conversation or incident ready to act.
Your notification center (the bell)
The bell in the top navigation is separate from the delivery toggles on this page. The toggles decide which alerts reach you; the bell shows you recent activity once you're in the app.
- Click the bell to open a panel of recent items: each row has a title, a short subtitle, and a relative time, with a dot marking unread items.
- The unread count on the bell refreshes on its own in the background, so it stays roughly current without a page reload. It also refreshes the moment you open the panel.
- Click a row to jump straight to what it's about: a message thread, a student, an incident, or your payment methods. A few item types (like calendar events) show up for awareness but aren't clickable.
Search across the app
The top navigation also has a search box ("Search students, messages, people...") for finding things fast from anywhere in Clear Day.
- Start typing and a dropdown previews matches grouped under Students, Messages, and People.
- Click a result to go straight to it: a student opens their profile, a message opens its thread, a person opens messaging.
- Press Enter or pick See all results to open the full results page. The box also remembers your recent searches, which you can clear from the dropdown.
- In the app, the same search lives on the School tab: tap the magnifying-glass button in the top-right of the School screen. It groups the same Students, Messages, and People results and keeps a clearable list of your recent searches.
Still not getting alerts
If a category is on but nothing's coming through, the cause is usually device permissions. Walk through Notifications not arriving.
