A payment didn't go through

Why a tuition payment can fail, and how to fix your card and settle the balance in the Stripe Customer Portal.

A failed payment leaves the balance open until you sort out the cause. When an autopay charge can't go through, Stripe retries it automatically over the following days, and Clear Day lets you know so the invoice doesn't quietly fall behind.

Why payments fail

  • Expired card. The card on file is past its expiration date.
  • Insufficient funds. The account didn't have enough to cover the charge the day it ran.
  • Bank decline. Some banks hold recurring or larger charges until you okay them. A call to the number on the back of the card usually clears it.
  • Wrong details. A mistyped card number, billing zip, or CVC.

Fix it in the billing portal

The quickest fix is to update your card and let the next retry settle the balance:

  1. Open the Autopay screen. If an autopay charge failed, you'll see a banner pointing you here.
  2. Choose Manage on that enrollment to open the Stripe Customer Portal (titled Billing) in your browser. You're already signed in.
  3. In the portal, update your payment method: replace the card or switch to a bank account.
  4. Pay the open invoice there, or let the next automatic retry pick it up now that a good card is on file.

You can also update or add a card ahead of time from your Payment methods screen, so the next charge has something good to run against. See Manage payment methods and Set up autopay.

If it still won't clear

  • Check the card or account details against what your bank has on file.
  • Try a different card, or pay from a bank account instead.
  • Call your bank to make sure they aren't holding the charge.
