Format messages and add media
Bold, lists, mentions, emoji, GIFs, attachments, and link previews: the small touches that make a message easier to read.
A plain message does the job. A little formatting makes it land faster. You can bold the part that matters, drop in a list, tag a coworker, add an emoji or a GIF, attach a photo or PDF, and paste a link that turns into a tidy preview card. The tools are the same whether you're writing a channel post, a reply, or a direct message.
Format text
Clear Day uses plain Markdown. Type the shortcuts yourself, or tap the formatting buttons and let them do it.
| Style | What you type | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | **important** | important |
| Italic | *gentle* | gentle |
| Strikethrough | ~~scratch this~~ | |
| Bulleted list | - item at the start of a line | a bullet point |
| Numbered list | 1. item at the start of a line | a numbered point |
| Inline code | `code` | a code snippet |
On the web
A formatting toolbar sits under the message box, with buttons for Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, bullet list, numbered list, and inline code. Select text first to format it, or tap a button and start typing. Bold and Italic also answer to Ctrl+B and Ctrl+I.
Return sends the message; press Shift+Return for a new line.
On mobile
Tap the Aa button below the message box to open the format row. It holds bold (B), italic (I), strikethrough (S), and the two list buttons. Tap Aa again to tuck it away.
Once you're in a list, pressing return starts the next item for you. Press return again on an empty item to break out.
Whichever way you write, a message can run up to 2,000 characters. On the web, a counter shows up as you get close.
Mention someone
Type @ and start a name. A short list of people in the conversation appears; pick one and the mention drops into your message. Whoever you tag gets notified, so it's the right move when you need a specific person to see a post.
Add emoji
On the web, tap the smiley-face button in the toolbar, then search and pick one. On mobile, tap the smiley-face button and the emoji grid opens above the keyboard. Either way, the emoji lands wherever your cursor is.
Add a GIF
GIF search runs on Giphy.
- On the web, tap the GIF button in the toolbar. On mobile, tap the image button next to the emoji button.
- Search for what you want, or scroll the trending picks.
- Tap a GIF to attach it, then send.
Attach a file
Tap the paperclip button next to the message box.
On the web, you can attach several files at once (images and PDFs) and mix types in the same message. On mobile, the paperclip asks whether you want to Take Photo or Choose from Library.
Each staged file shows as its own thumbnail before you send: images preview, PDFs get a document icon. Tap the small x on any one to drop just that file. The send button wakes up the moment you have text, a GIF, or at least one attachment ready.
Each file can be up to 10 MB. The accepted types are JPEG, PNG, HEIC/HEIF, and WebP images and PDF documents.
Paste a link
Paste a web address and Clear Day pulls a preview card: the page's title, description, and thumbnail. It appears under your draft, then rides along with the message so everyone who reads it sees the same card. Nothing else to do.
